The Household Expiration Guide: When To Replace Your Items

Extending the life of our belongings is better for both the environment and our bank accounts. However, unfortunately, certain everyday household items must unavoidably be swapped out periodically for health, safety, and efficiency. To keep your home running smoothly, set some reminders for these essential replacement timelines.

Kitchen sponges. Sponges breed bacteria rapidly. Swap them every one to two weeks, but make sure to use eco-friendly ones: mass-produced sponges can be loaded with highly polluting microplastics.

Cutting boards. Think about changing this when deep knife grooves appear, as they trap bacteria. Keep in mind that wooden boards last longer than plastic ones and are better for the environment.

Water filters. Replace pitcher filters every two months and refrigerator filters every six months.

Air purifier filters. Swap HVAC filters every 60–90 days; standalone purifier filters last six to nine months. Clean filters slash energy bills and trap allergens.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years and CO units every seven years. Remember to install fresh batteries annually.

Fire extinguishers. Replace disposable models every 10–12 years. Rechargeable versions should be serviced every six years.

Toothbrushes. Swap these every three to four months, either the head if it’s a replaceable electric toothbrush or the whole thing if it’s an old-school analog model. Bamboo toothbrushes are more eco-friendly.

Shower curtain liners and toilet brushes. Change liners every six months to prevent mold. Replace toilet brushes twice a year.

Pillows and sheets. Bedding accumulates dead skin and dust mites, so you’ll want to replace bed sheets and pillows every one to two years both for good hygiene and to keep them feeling soft and fresh. Pillowcases should be washed weekly.
